Stepin Fetchit

Film Review: Emma (2009)
Written by Gary Sweeney

Emma is a novel written by Jane Austen and published in December 1815. Austen, whose prior works included Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), was known for examining the lives of 19th century women. In Emma, that woman is Emma Woodhouse, a young, attractive woman whose advantageous life affords her a superior level of comfort. Her passion lies in concerning herself with the lives of others, or more directly, the romantic escapades of those around her, much to the chagrin of her father (played by Michael Gambon). Of her matchmaking abilities, Emma says: ?People - their hopes, their dreams, their aspirations - there I am the expert.? When Harriet Smith (Louise Dylan) arrives, Emma directs her efforts towards her. Harriet is a bit naïve and could realistically use the help, but Emma?s controlling manner becomes detrimental when she advises Harriet to ignore a proposal from a farmer and hold out for Mr. Elton (Blake Ritson) to marry her. Emma?s preoccupation with others causes her to unwittingly ignore her own needs.

BBC has partnered with Warner Bros. to release this brand new four-part miniseries starring Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller. BBC originally commissioned Sandy Welch to write the script for Emma in 1995. However, other film and television adaptations of the story released around the same time caused BBC to abandon the project. Twelve years later, it has re-emerged with fantastic costume design by Rosalind Ebbutt. Take a look at this exclusive clip from Emma:

THE DVD

This miniseries has been presented in a two-disc edition with a few extras thrown in for good measure. Bonus features include: Emma's locations, Emma's costumes, Emma's music, Emma's Mr. Woodhouse: Interview with Michael Gambon. Both the audio and video are stellar, with period settings that radiate in and dialogue that brings the romanticism of Jane Austen?s characters to life.

THE CONCLUSION

For fans of literature, this one is not to be missed. Director Jim O?Hanlon brings to the screen one of the most memorable stories of all time by combining superior original music with makeup and special effects. Harlow in Hollywood...

Jean Harlow. The name resonates. Platinum Blonde. Blonde Bombshell. The labels applied by press agents during Harlow's seven-year career carry a charge 70 years later. An actress who died in 1937 has currency in 21st-Century culture. Harlow's films make new fans, whether in revival theaters, on cable television, or on DVD. Vintage Harlow photographs sell for as much as $14,000, and camera negatives for as much as $50,000. Chat room fans debate the cause of her husband's suicide and that of her own death. The movies' first blonde sex symbol has become a legend. In fact, Harlow is the very prototype of all the blonde icons who have followed, from Marilyn Monroe to Jayne Mansfield, an original blueprint for glamour and tragedy. In this, the centennial year of Jean Harlow's birth, Harlow expert Darrell Rooney and Hollywood historian Mark Vieira team to present the most beautiful -- and accurate -- book on Harlow ever produced. With more than 280 images, Harlow in Hollywood makes a case for Harlow as an Art Deco artifact in an iconic setting. Harlow in Hollywood is the first book devoted to both the Harlow image and the city that spawned it. Click HERE to order!
