Emma is a novel written by Jane Austen and published in December 1815. Austen, whose prior works included Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), was known for examining the lives of 19th century women. In Emma, that woman is Emma Woodhouse, a young, attractive woman whose advantageous life affords her a superior level of comfort. Her passion lies in concerning herself with the lives of others, or more directly, the romantic escapades of those around her, much to the chagrin of her father (played by Michael Gambon).
