Emma is a novel written by Jane Austen and published in December 1815. Austen, whose prior works included Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), was known for examining the lives of 19th century women. In Emma, that woman is Emma Woodhouse, a young, attractive woman whose advantageous life affords her a superior level of comfort.
